Use of dispersal–vicariance analysis in biogeography – a critique
نویسنده
چکیده
One of the central aims of modern historical biogeography is to reconstruct the history of a particular taxon or a group of taxa based on phylogenetic hypotheses (Cox & Moore, 2005; Lomolino et al., 2006). The advent of molecular datasets and improved analytical methods in phylogenetics has led to a proliferation of phylogenetic studies in the last two decades. Historical biogeography has been riding this molecular phylogenetic wave, and there has been a tremendous increase in the number of studies attempting to infer the history of various taxa. Historical biogeography of Haloragaceae: an out-of-Australia hypothesis with multiple intercontinental dispersals.
Haloragaceae are a cosmopolitan plant family with its centre of diversity in Australia. Here, we investigate the historical biogeography of the family and the role of vicariance or dispersal in shaping its current distribution. DNA sequences from ITS, matK and the trnK 5' and trnK 3' introns were obtained for 102 species representing all 8 genera of Haloragaceae for use in Bayesian molecular da...
متن کاملThe resurrection of oceanic dispersal in historical biogeography.
Geographical distributions of terrestrial or freshwater taxa that are broken up by oceans can be explained by either oceanic dispersal or vicariance in the form of fragmentation of a previously contiguous landmass. The validation of plate-tectonics theory provided a global vicariance mechanism and, along with cladistic arguments for the primacy of vicariance, helped create a view of oceanic dis...
متن کاملDispersal is fundamental to biogeography and the evolution of biodiversity on oceanic islands
Since the dispersal versus vicariance debate of the 1970s and early 1980s and the broad acceptance and melding of the theories of cladistics and plate tectonics, vicariance approaches to historical biogeography have dominated the last two or three decades. Only vicariant mechanisms were considered to offer testable patterns and refutable hypotheses, dispersal being a random process essentially ...
متن کاملPALEOBIOGEOGRAPHY: The Relevance of Fossils to Biogeography
■ Abstract Paleobiogeography has advanced as a discipline owing to the increasing utilization of a phylogenetic approach to the study of biogeographic patterns. Coupled with this, there has been an increasing interdigitation of paleontology with molecular systematics because of the development of techniques to analyze ancient DNA and because of the use of sophisticated methods to utilize molecu...
متن کاملWeighted ancestral area analysis and a solution of the redundant distribution problem.
A new cladistic method for the estimation of ancestral areas is based on reversible parsimony in combination with a weighting scheme that weights steps in positionally plesiomorphic branches more highly than steps in positionally apomorphic branches. By applying this method to cladograms of human mitochondrial DNA, the method is superior to previously proposed algorithms. The method is also an ...
